Melissa McGrath is a Principal Lawyer within Coleman Greig’s Commercial Advice team.

Melissa is a specialist Intellectual Property lawyer and Trade Mark Attorney with qualifications in both law and biochemistry and over 15 years’ experience. With a sharp business acumen, she is recognised globally by her peers and clients as a leading IP lawyer.

Melissa’s clients have included Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music, Warner Music, Navman Wireless Australia, Voxson, FMCG, media, life sciences and technology industries, with a particular interest in providing advice on patentable inventions and trade marks. She understands the complexities of copyright and is able to manage disputes in each of these areas. Melissa enjoys creating new businesses to commercialise innovative products and technologies.

Her strategic approach allows Melissa to advise global and domestic entities alike on how to gain competitive commercial advantage through the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights. She has been proven to steer companies away from business disruption and avoid costs through encroaching on existing rights.

From patent strategy advice to dispute management, to freedom to operate advice, to brand portfolio creation, to global and domestic IP protection and enforcement, no day is the same. Melissa also has experience in representing clients at trial, appeal and special leave to the High Court of Australia.

She recently advised a global logistics business in relation to disputes regarding the protection of its market leading software platform.

Melissa has been recognised for multiple awards including the recommended Lawyer for Intellectual Property (Patents), Chambers Asia-Pacific, Intellectual Property, The Legal 500 Asia Pacific, World Trade Mark Review and Patents and the Intellectual Asset Management 1000.

Melissa is the Chair of the Marketing Experts Committee of the International Trade Mark Association Public Information Committee and of the NSW Intellectual Property of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ) Committee. She is also a Fellow of IPTA and former Chair of the INTA marketing experts committee.

Away from work, Melissa enjoys Formula1 (F1), the arts and enjoys a good dessert.
