About Stephen

Stephen has been a member of the firm since 1987 and has been practising for over 25 years and leads Coleman Greig’s Employment Law Team. He has developed the firm’s practice in the area of employment law, advising and representing employer and employee clients in a wide range of areas including unfair dismissals, unfair contracts, discrimination, legislative and award compliance, and workforce restructuring and redundancies. He has written employment law commentary for Smokeball electronic legal publishing.

Stephen also has special expertise in the area of trade practices law, and regularly advises clients on anti-competitive conduct and misleading or deceptive conduct issues, as well as consumer issues such as product liability and product recalls. He regularly provides training for clients’ staff on practical compliance with the law and management and minimisation of trade practices risks, and on other compliance issues. He has written commentary for CCH’s Australian Trade Practices Reporter and has also contributed to CCH’s Australian Master Trade Practices Guide.

His broad range of experience, including extensive experience in commercial litigation, gives him a practical background in assessing business problems and resolving disputes with commercially satisfactory results.

Stephen also has particular expertise on the legal issues relating to intellectual disabilities and has published articles in various journals and a book, When I’m Gone, which is a plain English guide to will-making for parents of children with an intellectual disability. At the request of the Federal Government, he has written plain language guides (Planning for the future, Getting things sorted) to special disability trusts and related social security concessions for people with a severe disability, and their families.

Away from work, Stephen’s passions are music, reading, theatre, cooking and wine.
