Happy New Year Readers
For the next 12 months I will be heading up the Employment Law and Business Migration team here at Coleman Greig, while Stephen Booth takes a sabbatical and ventures around Europe (in my opinion - a well deserved break after 25 years of practice!).
If we are lucky we might hear from Stephen throughout the year - maybe even with a description of the picturesque locations he happens to be exploring - but for now it is probably best to review some of the latest developments in the employment law/immigration space over the holiday period!
The main changes that took effect from 1 January 2013 while many of us were still holidaying include:
- Fair Work Australia is now referred to as the Fair Work Commission (whilst you can still access the tribunal via the old web address www.fwa.gov.au the new address is www.fwc.gov.au - so don't forget to update your favourites / bookmarks)
- Employees now have 21 days to lodge an unfair dismissal claim (as opposed to 14 days)
- Employees now also have 21 days to lodge an adverse action claim (as opposed to 60 days)
- For some of you it may also be relevant to point out that there have also been some changes to the rules relating to enterprise agreements - so please be conscious of the changes if you intend on entering into an EA in 2013 and contact Coleman Greig for more information.
Speaking of the holiday season, 2012 was certainly a busy year for me personally and professionally that finished on a high! I was fortunate enough to be able to end the working year early and spend all of December travelling through Europe and the UK while on long service leave, and visiting a part of the world I had not seen before. I always envisaged holding on to the leave as a bit of nest egg, but ultimately made the call to use it how it was intended to be used - as an opportunity to recuperate, unwind & relax after 10 years of service with Coleman Greig. A decision which I will now be promoting to my family, friends and clients!
After such a long break I am refreshed and ready to kick off the new year - and what a big year 2013 promises to be!
